Grandpa Hal’s Waffles
(Makes approximately 4 waffles)
Hal Milton, a California minister and advisor and the author of Wising Up: A Life Without Regrets, likes to prepare these waffles for his grandchildren. He advises experimenting and being creative with additions — try using different grains, nuts, or dried fruits.

3/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1 tablespoon oat bran
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk or water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons sunflower seeds

Preheat waffle iron; grease or spray with oil if necessary. Mix flour, baking powder, oats and salt. Add milk or water slowly. Add oil and mix. Add beaten egg and mix. Add sunflower seeds. Pour spoonfuls of batter into waffle iron and spread thinly. Cook until golden brown and crisp. Serve with maple or raspberry syrup.
